Dear Agnes, dear Father Ackim,
First of all, we wish you a happy and peaceful New Year!
In response to your enquiry about sending German volunteers to Zambia
and hosting Zambian volunteers in Germany:
1. we have received a qualified application from a young woman who will
be completing training as a medical laboratory technician. We will
conduct an intensive preliminary interview with her and check whether
she fits into the ewe concept of volunteering in Zambia. To do this, we
need to know whether it is possible in principle to accept a German
volunteer in the Diocese of Monze for this year, whether accommodation
is guaranteed, whether a job can be arranged and whether supervision is
guaranteed.
If this is basically given, we can - with the participation of Agnes -
make the selection and, if necessary, start the preparation.
2. we cannot accept any Zambian volunteers this year (2024/25) as the
necessary support and integration is not guaranteed. Irmela will step
down from the board and from responsibility for this area after 15 years
for reasons of age, Evans is at the end of his studies and must put all
his commitment into it.
We are intensively searching for a successor for Irmela, but so far we
have not found anyone from the circle of former volunteers who live here
in the region and are therefore continuing to look for people who feel
connected to ewe and its goals, who are willing to make this voluntary
and unpaid commitment and who are also professionally qualified.
Until then, we cannot be responsible for accepting Zambian volunteers.
In general, the social climate here in Germany has become rather
unfriendly or even hostile towards non-European foreigners. One of the
reasons for this is the high number of refugees (over 1 million in 2023
alone) who are seeking refuge and safety in Germany from Ukraine and
other war-torn and crisis-ridden countries.
In addition, many sponsors of social institutions are no longer able to
contribute the amount they need to finance their own work.
We hope that these framework conditions for a voluntary social year in
Germany will improve sustainably in the coming years.
We ask for your understanding, are working on a sustainable solution for
the coming years and hope to be able to continue this intercultural
exchange with you as our partners in the Diocese of Monze.
Please let us know by 20 January whether you are willing to host and
accompany a volunteer from Germany from September 2024.
Kind regards
Guido for the ewe board
